Hues X: Day 3 – What a Carnival!

In the sweltering heat of Manipal mornings, events that require utmost patience and composure were held in the cool, air conditioned innards of the CBS building. Day 3 kicked off with Poetry writing as the first event. The judges for the Hindi Poetry writing were Dr. Deepak Singhal (Department of Public Health Dentistry) and Dr. Saurabh Kumar (Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry). The English counterpart of this event was judged by Dr. Meena Anand Kukkamalla (Department of Periodontology) and Dr. Deepika Pai (Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry.)

As the morning progressed, this was followed by Spot Photography, Body Art and Creative Writing.

The afternoon events consisted of Installation and Turncoat. Installation was a very interesting event wherein the contestants utilized scrap materials to create working models! It was judged by Dr. Veena Hegde (Department of Prosthodontics) and Dr. Kishore Ginjupalli (Department of Dental Materials). Turncoat, an event that requires presence of mind and the ability to think on your feet, was judged by Dr. Vasudev Ballal (Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics) and Dr. Shruthi Acharya (Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology.)

The evening turned out to be surprisingly pleasant and windy. The evening events were held at the Amphitheatre. Kick starting the evening was the Indian Non Classical Light Vocal Solo, an event where the most soulful voices struck a chord with the hearts of the audience. The event was judged by Dr. Nayana Prabhu (Department of Prosthodontics) and Dr. Abhishek Rao. Dr. Abhishek Rao is himself a brilliant singer and enchanted the crowd with a little magic of his own, leaving them wanting for more.

The sun set soon, giving way to twilight as the spotlights were turned on to welcome the contestants of the next event, the Indian Classical Dance Solo. A dazzling array of color, glittering jewelry, mathematically precise angulation of limbs and the chhan-chhan of paayals were nothing short of a treat to the eyes and ears. This event was judged by Dr. Annapoorna, who herself is a trained dancer, and Dr. Rashmi Nayak (Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry.)

The next event was from the other end of the globe, the Western Dance Solo. The dancers pumped the audience with enthusiasm and energy as they flawlessly matched the rhythm of their bodies to the tempo and beats of the music. This event with explosive and infectious energy was judged by Dr Madhumita Natarajan (Department of Orthodontics) and Mr. Prashant from Prashant Dance Academy.

The last event of Day 3 the Movie Spoof. The teams were required to pick a movie from a list and present a skit. The wackiest and most imaginative alternative to the original plot would get the most points. The show put up by the various teams drew ample laughter from the audience, but some of the jokes lacked lustre at times. In spite of this slight, the event was high on entertainment and innovation. It was judged by Dr. Srikant and Dr. Sridhar (Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry.)
