Hues X : Day 1 – The Beginning

Hues X kicked off to a start on 23rd February at the Centre for Basic Sciences. The week-long cultural fest organized by MCODS, Manipal commenced with a Hindi debate. Judged by Dr. Karthik and Dr. Saurabh, the topic for the event was “The house believes ‘Pandit Nehru ek adarsh aur doordarshi rajneta the jinhone swatantrata ke pashchat aadhunik Bharat ki neev rakhi’”. The event saw participation in large numbers from all the years with stiff competition among the teams as they put forward their best arguments.

WINNERS – HINDI DEBATE:

First: Prabhjeet Singh & Shafali Agrawal (Fourth year)

Second: Akanksha Roy & Rituparna Dubey (TIPS)

Third: Pallabi Roy & Lochan (Third Year)

How many times was the coin tossed in the iconic coin-tossing scene in Sholay? How many movies have Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starred in together? Having deep knowledge of Bollywood was a prerequisite to answering such questions in the preliminary round of the second event, Antakshari. It started off with a preliminary round which had a set of questions from various Bollywood movies across various decades. This was followed by the finals featuring the 6 highest scoring teams from the prelims.

WINNERS – ANTAKSHARI:

First: Third Year

Second: TIPS

Third: Fourth Year

The next event of the day was Cartooning. The topic given was ‘Tear Down The Wall’. Various interpretations of the phrase were seen in the artworks of the participants, most involving Donald Trump engaged in various ridiculous activities. The judge for the event was Mr. Jayanth.

WINNERS – CARTOONING:

First: Soham Mitra (Second Year)

Second: Ridyumna Garain (Fourth Year)

Third: Hrishita Majumder (Third Year)

A new event introduced in Hues this year was the mono act. Participants had the liberty of performing either a monologue or stand-up comedy. The event was judged by Dr. Lokendra and Dr. Shashidhar.

WINNERS – MONO ACT:

First: Akanksha Roy (TIPS)

Second: Rituparna Dubey (TIPS)

Third: Abhay Paul (Third Year)

In the evening, Hues was officially inaugurated along with the unveiling of the logo by the Dean, MCODS Manipal at the amphitheater. The following inter-department cultural event was the much awaited final event of the day. Seeing various professors step out of their stern persona to shake a leg to Kala Chashma was indeed a delight. All the departments put up a great show indeed. The highlight of the evening was a performance put up by the non-teaching staff depicting the various folk dances of Karnataka – yakshagana, tiger dance, and kangilu.
