ABCD 2016

If life were to be described as a race, it would perhaps be more of a marathon than a sprint. And as is the norm, every so often, there is a small cubbyhole to slow down in, and quench the thirst born of the race in some cool shade and water. For an evening, the Batch of 2012-KMC, reveled in a cubbyhole of their own devising, a true celebration of self – in the best manner possible.

ABCD – whether in form of its proper expansion Annual Ball Cum Dinner, or as the adage proven amidst the same expansion – Any Body Can Dance, is the bittersweet boisterous gathering of the only group of KMC-ites who actually lay hold of the title of being ‘Very-Nearly-Doctors.’ In addition to the several humorous titles they then proceeded to award themselves over the course of the evening, of course.

Fairy lights earned their name, glittering will ‘o’ the wisps that lit up the entranceway with an unearthly light. It was still the same TMA Pai Hall, It was still the same Manipal, but the doorway was a magical portal that bridged time in an instant back to 2012. The noise emanating out into the mundane world took on a character of its own. It was rambunctious, it was hopeful. But most of all, it waxed nostalgic.

Nostalgia and hope, both were experienced in equal measure in a feat worthy of Janus himself. On one hand, the four and half years behind carried unforgettable memories, and yet ahead lay the future just bristling to prove that it was up to the challenge. A few pearlescent gems of wisdom passed on by the faculty braced the group for the days to come.

Interspersed between the revelries was the highlight of the night, as the tradition of awarding titles jumped from yearbook pages to a pageant-reminiscent function. Titles laced with puns – such as “The Dark Knight”, with innuendo, exemplified by “The Last Man Standing”, or just in your face funny as “Mr. Chandler Bing” were handed out and received with convivial enthusiasm.

The revelries consisted of breathtaking performances chronicling the skills that had been polished or in some cases, discovered over the course of their stay at Manipal. Mirth that could not possibly be bottled up burst out in form of song and dance, punctuated by joyful shrieks and thrilling trills of whistles industriously purchased for this very occasion. Some of it even managed to happen on stage.

The evening passed as quick as a hummingbirds flap, doubtless born of the same euphoria that whittled away time quicker than Cinderella could see. For fairy lights lit the sky starry, and under them passed a night worthy of a fairy tale.
