Parikshit: The Student Satellite Team

Currently working on a 2U nano-satellite under the student project wing of ISRO, Team Parikshit is any ambitious student’s chance to get incredible exposure to the aerospace industry while working with a close-knit family.

Since the time when they were just an idea of MIT students in 2010, Parikshit has grown leaps and bounds. They even signed a MoU with ISRO in 2014 and got their preliminary design report (PDR) accredited by them. Holding weekly meetings regarding the status of progress, and charting out the course for the next week, it’s now their attitude to be one step ahead of any challenges that come their way.

Students part of Team Parikshit get the opportunity to not just hone their skills in their respective sub-systems, but also learn a lot about the others. Their work doesn’t just end in the Parikshit lab, but also incorporates attending international conferences, meet technical experts from world-renowned establishments like ISRO and NASA, and most importantly, making a difference in the aerospace industry.

Having over 60 presentations and papers under their name, this current 17-membered team is looking to expand their family. With their General Body Meeting on the 21st of October, and Recruitments on the 24th of October, Team Parikshit is looking for individuals with a drive to learn, stamina and will to work hard under pressure, the ability to “make things work”, and the passion for working on what is arguably one of the best Student Satellite projects in the country.

The qualifying students will get to work first-hand on the two payloads the crew is working on at the moment. One of them is a thermal imaging camera (something that has never before been achieved by a student satellite project) which aims to image urban heat islands and map oceans and cloud cover. Their secondary payload is a de-orbitting electrodynamic tether which will be responsible for pulling the satellite out of orbit very effectively. This, the team believes, will help every other satellite in the world, and will be a step towards revolutionizing the aerospace industry, as space junk is a growing concern in the aerospace sector.

With an extensive alumni network established in world-renowned institutions such as NASA (a particular alumnus is now the first Indian student on board a NASA Zero-G flight) and the Swedish Space Agency, and working for acclaimed events such as Google’s X-Prize, Team Parikshit is now looking to pass on its knowledge and legacy.

Possessing remarkable laurels such as being personally lauded by the ISRO director for their incredible work, and achieving the first spot for their team poster in an International conference held in Australia, Parikshit is a platform for aspiring students to work with state-of- the art technology, refine their technical and management skills, have a great time with fun traditions (which will be disclosed on a need-to-know basis), and most importantly work with a family and leave their mark on the final frontier for aeons to come.
