TEMPUS PRETIOSO: Time is Precious

The newly formed Emergency Medicine club of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal named ‘Tempus Pretioso’ is the brain-child of Karan Kalra (UG Student) under the guidance of Dr. Jayaraj MB (Department of Emergency Medicine, KMC) and Dr. Anita Nileshwar Shenoy (Department of Anaesthesiology, KMC).  Training to aid in overcoming the panic and acting quickly during moments of crisis in reality, is the main aim of the club.

Their first hands-on workshop hosted on 26th March, 2017 at the Clinical Simulation Lab, Health Science Library was conducted by Dr. Naman Agrawal (Senior Resident, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS-New Delhi). It was an intense interactive event, held in two sessions, based on real-life case scenarios on ‘Rudiments of Emergency Management’. The delegates were divided into groups with an Intern as their leader to solve the respective cases. Everybody felt the adrenaline rush through them, even though it was a fictional contract, as the organizing team enacted the cases exceptionally well.

As a medico, it is vital to be prepared to face cum tackle any sort of clinical presentations. Dr. Naman advised the budding clinicians to focus on ‘Patient safety’ and also stressed upon the ABC(D): Airway, Breathing, Circulation and (Deformity) approach to any and every case. The students were then taught few indispensable procedures important at the casualty, such as endotracheal intubation and intravenous line insertion.

The last few cases were dealt on high fidelity mannequin which had palpable pulse, respiratory movements and many more live-patient like features. The participants expressed an overwhelming positive response and are looking forward to attend more of such practical hands-on workshop; the committee definitely aims to fulfill the same.
