A Letter to Geet

Dear Geet,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of spirits. I know we haven’t officially met yet, but I’ve admired you for as long as I’ve remembered. In fact, I think it is safe to say that I know a thing or two about you.

Thank you for teaching me that life is all about the chances you take and the trains you miss. As a child, I could never really relate to your childish impulses, ironically enough. I suppose it is tough for a six-year-old to decipher how and why someone could be so eager to run away from the comforts of home to an unknown place. I never really understood how you could jump into a lake without having any regard for your own safety, or why you would fuss so much over something as trivial as missing a train. But I grew up, and finally, it became more comfortable with what seemed so strange to me back then. I think as a child, we think that the beauty of life lies in plans we write down in secret diaries. Little do we know it’s in the chaos of railway stations at midnight, befriending in strangers and moving where the Universe takes us.

With each passing year, I have grown fonder of your ways. It is only after you missed your first train that your journey really started. You were careless yet kind, to even strangers like Aditya. It has now become easier for me to understand that it was your carefree attitude that made your heart leap at every opportunity that could turn your dreams into reality.

I don’t think anyone from our generation has it in their heart to hate you, we grew up with you and your carefree ways. Taking the ownership of your own actions is what is truly commendable about you. You once admitted that you had become a shadow of yourself, and yet you soldiered on. You did not regret your bad decisions and saw them as an opportunity to start your life anew. Your heart was full of warmth, forgiving and accepting someone who hurt you and still choosing to move on. While we may not always get what we want, we will still receive what we need.

Simply knowing you has taught me that it is okay to put yourself before others at times. Thank you for making me fall in love with myself and making me aspire to be my own favourite, just like you. After all, if you don’t love yourself, how are you going to love anyone else?

You are bold, feisty, zesty and full of life. You are like an unexpected cold breeze on a hot summer night. So, thank you for being yourself and playing a vital role in helping me find myself whenever I felt lost. Stay the same – flawed and fabulous, and keep the spirits high!

Yours Lovingly,
A girl who found herself
