Indo-German Metabolic Meeting: Day 1

The second edition of the Indo German Metabolic Meet hosted by Kasturba Medical college, Hannover Medical-Germany and Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducted two talks on Emergency Management in Inborn Errors of Metabolism and the Approach and Management of Metabolic Encephalopathy in Neonatal Period by Prof. Dr. Anibh Das Hanover and Prof DR. Leslie Lewis respectively.

The two talks were very educational and stressed about the pattern of inborn disorders in neonates are rising in our country. Dr.Anibh Das spoke about how Germany was advancing in the field of Emergency Management and how it helped to give the children a life to look forward to. He also emphasized on the signs and symptoms of inborn metabolism and what to do if you suspect an inborn error. Dr.Leslie Lewis, a practicing physician at our very own hospital elucidated the various challenges our country still faces in terms of metabolic errors and what the available tests were to diagnose it. His talk left the students thinking about what new changes they can bring about in the field.

The afternoon session began with a presentation by Professor Dr. Girish KM of the Department of Genetics KMC Manipal. He spoke about the revolutionary work that he and his team at the central research laboratory are doing in the field of new monogenic disorders of the skeletal system that they have discovered. He explained the strenuous work and meticulous effort that has been put into finding out the causative genetic factors in these diseases. He briefed about the various novel techniques involved in the gene sequencing. His collaboration with the various institution from the middle east, Europe, and East Asia portrayed the magnanimity of his work and the importance of the world today is attributing to Genetics. His narrative was thought-provoking and truly inspiring.

This was followed by a short lecture by Professor Dr. Jyothi Shetty on Antenatal Manifestations of inborn errors of metabolism. With ample pictorial representations and various case scenarioes, she explained the challenges of OBGYN during antenatal screening. She spoke of the importance of chorionic villi sampling and amniocentesis, the gain of popularity by genetic screening in these procedures over conventional biochemical analyses. She too reiterated the importance of Genetics and thereby a relevant rise in our current Medical community’s interests in the field.  The afternoon sessions concluded with a tea break and a viewing of various posters put up at the convention regarding research projects ranging from metabolic disorders, Pharmacotherapeutics, pharmacovigilance and community cross-sectional studies.

Workshops, Day 1:

An emergency situation, a patient with an unknown ailment and a clock ticking steadily down- this is what awaited the unsuspecting delegates of IGMM in this morning’s emergency management workshop. This event was a conducted by the Emergency Medicine department and the Department of Paediatrics in collaboration. It began with a quiz, a presentation on IEM and its associated cases, following which the delegates were given the first-hand experience on dealing with an emergency IEM simulation.

The participants were taken to the simulation lab and given a case to diagnose and a patient to resuscitate, within a stipulated time frame. The simulation was designed to mimic an emergency room, with a monitor displaying the vitals, oxygen masks, an IV line and more.

The workshop was well executed, with not a single dull moment
