Utsav Lite 2022

Utsav, MAHE’s most awaited fest was finally held after three long years. The enthusiasm and energy shown by everyone was truly astounding. While fests were being held online during the pandemic, the unbeatable thrill and adrenaline rush of being on stage or cheering your college on was missing. The pronouncement of the fest saw participants jumping head first into preparation with hope glimmering in their eyes and energy that never seemed to diminish. The 4 days were jam packed with exciting events that allowed everyone to showcase their talents and win their college points.

 

DAY 1

Painting Competition

The inter-MAHE Painting competition was held on April 2, 2022, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at TMA Pai Hall 2. It was organized by KMC Manipal in collaboration with the Department of Commerce. Seventeen colleges had taken part in the competition. It was an open theme painting competition where participants were provided with the sheets and were asked to use watercolors as the sole medium and the participants were barred from carrying any electronic devices.

 The winners for the competition are as follow:

1st Prize – KMC, Manipal

2nd Prize- MAHE Teaching Departments, Manipal

3rd Prize- Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal

 

Collage Making Competition

The inter-MAHE Collage making competition was held on April 2, 2022, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at TMA Pai Hall 2. It was organized by MCHP in collaboration with MCONS. Fifteen colleges had taken part in the competition. The theme of the competition was released as beauty and body image where each college was asked to participate in a group of three. Each team was provided with a chart paper and participants were asked to bring magazines, newspapers & glue and were barred from carrying any pens, pencils, scissors, and electronic devices. No Painting or coloring was allowed.

The winners for the competition are as follow:

1st Prize – MCHP, Manipal

2nd Prize- Prasanna School of Public Health, Manipal

3rd Prize- KMC, Mangalore

 

Cartooning Competition

The inter-MAHE CARTOONING competition was held on April 2, 2022, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at TMA Pai Hall 2. It was organised by MCODS in collaboration with MCOPS. Thirteen colleges had taken part in the competition. The theme of the competition was texting where each participant was provided with the an A3 size sheet and were asked to use black ink pen as the sole medium. The participants were barred from carrying any electronic devices. The winners for the competition are as follow:

1st Prize – MCODS Mangalore

2nd Prize- KMC, Manipal

3rd Prize- WGSHA, Manipal

 

Eastern Vocal (Solo) Competition

On April 2nd, Saturday, the solo Eastern Vocal competition was hosted at the KMC greens. Everyone, from students to staff members, showed off their talents. From Arijit Singh’s Binte Dil, to Monali Thakur’s Moh Moh ke Dhage, the melody filled evening boasted performances by talented musicians from all of MAHE University. 

 The winners for the competition are as follow:

2nd Prize- MCODS Manipal

3rd Prize- MCHP Manipal

Staff Variety Entertainment Show

Excitement frenzied across KMC Greens, Manipal on the evening of 2nd April where Staff Variety Entertainment was about to begin. Various professors stood tall, proud, excited, and enthusiastic to represent their institution. One of The themes for this year was Tribute to Bollywood Actors  who Passed Away During Covid, other themes included Indian Diversity. Some notable performances included MCODS, Manipal who showcased the pandemic life as a mime show and MIT Manipal representing Love is Love to show solidarity with LGBTQIA+ on stage both of which received a huge round of applause from the audience.

2nd Prize- MIT Manipal

3rd Prize- KMC Mangalore

This event concluded Day 1 of Utsav Lite, setting a high mark for the rest of the evenings that were to follow.

 

DAY 2

Debate Competition

Utsav’s intercollegiate debate competition gave students the creative room to express their thoughts and opinions on the chosen topic for the year, “The future of learning is online.” The participants were given the subject about an hour before their presentation. Here, every college was represented by two debaters; one argued for the motion while the other was against the motion. All 22 teams were well prepared and used various linguistic devices like rhetoric, irony, proper tone, and diction to convince the jury and the audience on their stance. Many participants were armed with statistics and validated data which gave their arguments more factual reasoning. In contrast, others made their arguments more empathetic with the correct facial expressions and assertive body gestures. The participants exhibited excellent oratorical skills and confidently countered the jury’s rebuttals as well. The event ended successfully with a huge round of applause for all the debaters and a vote of thanks for the organizers.

2nd Prize- KMC Manipal

3rd Prize- KMC Mangalore and PSPH

 

Extempore

Utsaav’s Extempore event happened on the 3rd April 2022 at the TMA Pai Halls. The event was organised by the student volunteers of MIM and KMC Manglore. The judge’s panel consisted of Rotarian PHF Dr. K Suresh Shenoy who is a past president of Rotary Udupi and is also a skilled surgeon, and Mrs. Shashikala Rajvarma, who is the coordinator at Green Park Central school and has an experience of over 36 years teaching and Mrs. Jyothi Santhosh who is the vice prinicipal at Madhav Kripa school and holds an experience of over 23 years. Equipped with a top tier judge panel, the event began with the rules and regulations being informed. Each participant got 3 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to speak. The performances were captivating and kept the audience engaged to every word that was uttered. The event ended on a good note.

3rd Prize- MIC

 

Stand Up Comedy

The stand-up comedy event was conducted on 3rd April 2022 at the T.M.A Pai Halls. The event was conducted and hosted by the students of Manipal Institute of Technology and Manipal School of Life Sciences. Each person was given 4 minutes to perform. Dr. K Suresh Shenoy the past president of rotary Udupi and a skilled surgeon was one of the judges. The judge’s panel also consisted of Dr. Mahabalesh who is a professor at Alvas Ayurveda medical college, and Dr. Sumanth Sheny an Ayurvedic physician who works at the National Institute of Ayurveda Jaipur. The event started on a bright Sunday morning with excitement in the air. The participants filled the crowd with laughter with their witty jokes and commentaries.

3rd Prize- MCODS Mangalore

 

Classical Dance (Solo)

The solo classical dance performances gave the audience privy to the expansive and culturally rich dances from all over India. The competition was judged by the esteemed and well renowned dancers- Vidwan Sri Ramakrishna Kodencha, Vidwan Dri Sudhir Rao and Vidushi Srividya Sandesh.

The competition witnessed a variety of dance forms namely Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Kuchipudi, each of which told a unique mythological story. The morning rang with the sound of the ghungroos (bells) tapping rhythmically to the taal (beats) and was enhanced by the plethora of expressions and unique nuances of movements showcased by each dancer. All in all, the competition was exceptionally mesmerizing and kept the audience engaged throughout.

DAY 3

Eastern Vocal (Group)

The Eastern vocal (group) song competition as a part of Utsav started at 6pm in the evening. It comprised teams from various colleges of MAHE. All the teams put up mesmerizing performances with their melodious songs. Each performance was 4 minutes long. At 6:30pm, the Inauguration  ceremony started and the group song event was paused for a while. The Inauguration ceremony was initiated by Dr. Rashmi  Nayak, who welcomed the dignitaries to the stage. Dr. H.S. Ballal, Dr. Shobha Kamath, Dr. Geeta M., Mrs. Vasanthi R. Pai, Dr. Dilip G. Naik(Pro Vice Chancellor, MAHE), Dr. Narayan Sabahit (Registrar, MAHE), Dr. PLNG Rao (Pro Vice Chancellor(Quality Assurance and Faculty of Health Sciences), Dr. Venkatraya Prabhu (Pro Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences) were amongst the esteemed dignitaries of the event. This was followed by a welcome address by Dr. Shobha Kamath. Then Dr. H.S. Ballal addressed the audience followed by Mrs. Vasanthi R. Pai who declared the event open. The faculty coordinators were felicitated by presenting them with mementos. Prize distribution for the winners of the cultural events took place after this. This was followed by the continuation of the Eastern Vocal Group song event and then other events of the evening.

Eastern Dance (Solo)

A total of 15 different colleges of MAHE battled head to head in the Eastern dance solo event of Utsav Lite’22. The event was judged by renowned dancer Dharini Upadhya and entrepreneur Mahalasa Kini.Participants showcased immense talent with styles ranging from semi-classical to bollywood freestyle. It was an energy filled evening which kept the people engaged and led to a huge success.

Eastern Dance (Group)

The Eastern Dance (Group) competition was organized on 4th April at 8:30 on the KMC Greens stage by MIC & MCOPS.The event was a perfect amalgamation of symphony, coordination and culture as multiple stories were conveyed just through the dancers’ movements and formation.The event saw not only the participants but also the audience grooving to the songs.

3rd Prize- MCODS Mangalore

Western Dance (Duet)

Utsav’s highly anticipated event Western Duet took place on the 4th of April 2022, an exciting Monday night, at KMC greens. This event was organized by the student volunteers of MCHP and KMC. The judges panel consists of Mr. Shubakiran Mani, the proprietor of Sizzling Guys dance studio at Mangalore, and has won the runner up prize of 15 lakhs in the 7up competition. He has performed over 2000+ shows. Ms. Akshari Shetty, a part of Shadows 1, a professional dance organization in Bangalore was also present as a judge. Mr. Shishir Rao a choreographer at Destiny kings Bahrain and Sizzling guys Mangalore was also present. He has performed over 2000+ shows.

3rd Prize- KMC Mangalore

 

DAY 4

Fashion Show

Utsav 2022 ended on a fashionable note with talented college students showcasing their voguish looks. This year’s fashion show had 22 slots with each college putting its best foot forward. The event was briefly interrupted by the mighty Manipal rains but the determination of both participants and audiences was unshakable. Their glamorous costumes, elegant ramp walks  and modish looks were indeed the highlights of the evening at KMC Green.

There was an array of interesting themes ranging from “The cosmos”- a place of infinite possibilities teaming with the most beautiful kaleidoscope of planets, stars, nebulas and extraterrestrial life to the “Dashavatara forms of Vishnu” who restores the cosmic order by freeing humanity from oppression.

3rd Prize- WGSHA Manipal

 

Valedictory Ceremony

The valedictory ceremony lauded the efforts of the students, faculties and supporting staff. The Pro Vice chancellor of MAHE and Health Sciences motivated students and appreciated their efforts. Students who won various competitions during Utsav were felicitated.

Final results:

Champions: MCODS Mangalore

1st Runners Up: KMC Mangalore

2nd Runners Up: MCODS Manipal and WGSHA

Overall, the fest left everyone with a lifetime of memories to cherish. Participants learnt more about themselves and their teammates by working together and dealing with winning and failure together. Taking part in a fest after a hiatus felt nothing short of a miracle.
