Haute Couture: Celebrate Fashion

Picture this: an explosion of color, music and cutting edge designs. Models dancing and shimmying their way up and down the runways to the cheers of the gaping audience. Strobe lights going crazy as the artists walk the ramp.

Haute Couture brought the theme for this year’s Revels to life. The event began with a beauty pageant: Campus Princess, which was judged by Srinidhi Shetty, Miss Diva – Miss Supranational India in the Miss Diva, 2016. She spoke about her life before modeling, and how she left her job at Accenture, as an engineer, when she realized modelling was her true calling. She emphasized on the importance of knowing one’s purpose in life and left the audience in awe of the smart, successful and, not to mention, gorgeous personality in their midst.

The contestants were judged on their ramp walk, talent display, as well as their eloquence in answering the questions thrown at them by the judges. A huge crowd assembled in the Quadrangle, and for many of them, it was their first time witnessing a live beauty pageant. The atmosphere was electric as the contestants swayed and strutted to the beats of  the western as well as Bollywood music.

Just when we thought the evening was coming to an end, the MC announced that the Fashion Show would commence, after a chat with Miss Srinidhi.

As the Fashion Show began, the crowd suddenly became attentive, watching the stage with eager anticipation as the air was filled with catchy, glamourous music. Each team used vivid and vibrant decoration elements to enhance their performance. The models were seen in tasteful garments, which reflected the theme of the event: Carnaval. Innovative designs and preppy patterns filled the stage as the models sported the most bizarre,  yet endearing,  headgear. Some teams even went so far as to cosplay as Harley Quinn and The Joker, albeit Harley’s iconic candy floss hair-do was missing. The pumped up music, lit props and attractive attire made the stage set up seem like a scene straight out of a ‘carnaval’ in Spain.

The evening proved to many that Fashion is indeed an art, an artistic expression of the most hidden elements, that brings joy to life.
