The International Quiz of Medical Undergraduates, or IQMU for short, is the premier medical quiz competition organized by the students of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. This year was the fifth edition of the prestigious quiz, and due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the event was conducted online. The event commenced on 4th June with an inauguration event at 8:30 AM followed by the prelims. The prelims were overseen by Dr. Vinay Khanna conducted on the Quizziz app, where the team members had to answer a barrage of medical questions individually. This was followed by workshops from the academic clubs of KMC Manipal, Justitia, Cutting Edge, and TP. The day was concluded with a Gala Night, which had a comedy show and numerous fun activities for the participants. The results were announced at night, with 20 out of the 30 teams proceeding to the next round.
The quarter-finals were the Spotter and Case-based round, which was again overseen by Dr. Khanna. Only ten teams were able to qualify to the semi-finals by the end of this round. This was followed by the wild card, where the eliminated teams competed for a chance to get into the semi-finals. The semi-finals, under Dr. Joseph Thomas, saw the participants competing in the “Mental Relay,” the signature round of IQMU wherein the teams were divided into two wherein only one participant could choose the relevant history, and based on that, the other participant could order investigations required to solve the case. As a result, only six teams were able to proceed to the finals. The finals were held the very next day at 9 AM. Under Dr. Raj Warrier, the participants went through four exciting rounds, Medical Trivia, Rapid Fire, Jeopardy, and Final Jeopardy. After an intense round of quizzing, the participants eagerly awaited the results.
The participants praised the Scientific committee in particular for gathering the questions, making the rounds, ensuring that there is no foul play, and most importantly, making the quiz work on an online platform. At the valedictorian ceremony, the team from Madras Medical College were declared to be the winners. They were awarded a cash prize of 20,000/- as well as a PrepLadder subscription for their professional year.
